The Left, The Right, and the Ugly

The whole usage of the terms "the left" and "the right" comes from the French revolution back in the 1700's. The 3rd estate decided that since they were about 95% of the population (not to mention the poorest) that they should rule and not the 1st and 2nd estate. They then broke free and decided to meet separate from the original government. Once in their meetings that had their own seating and the person in charge would call on the one wishing to speak. He would address the speaker as "so-and-so on the left" or "so-and-so on the right". They were literally the left and the right sides of a room.
This brings to me an observation or two. One observation is that our country is a conglomeration of many different countries and the effects from their revolutions. How far will we evolve from when "the left" and "the right" were just sides of a room to becoming sides of entire families. Families should no fight amongst them selves to the point of bitter ends.
My second observation is that a room isn't very far apart and all it takes is for one to get up and walk across the room to get to the other side.
My final observation is that "the left" and "the right" sides would change depending upon how one was looking at the room.
Politics (like "religion") are merely opinions to which we hold most dear. Even the most un-political people have political opinions of which they would defend against any would-be opposer to said opinions. Why then is there so much argument, so much spewed hatred between peoples? Are opinions, ideas we hold within ourselves to be most true, worth ending friendships and relationships? America is in a lot of trouble if the answer is yes.
